I'm Captain Scott Hughes. I am a full-time Fort Myers area fishing guide which means that I derive 100% of my income from fishing. I specialize in fishing the water of Southwest Florida including those of Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, the 10,000 Islands and Tampa Bay.
I was born in Ft Myers and grew up on the shores of Lake Okeechobee. I started fishing at a very young age and honed my fishing skills on the waters of the "Big O". By age 13 I was fishing 50-60 days a year. After high school I moved back to Ft Myers and was a deck hand on a large boat running out of Ft Myers Beach, all the while attending Edison Community College in Ft Myers. I then transferred to Troy State University where I earned a BS degree in Health and Science. I soon got a job teaching science at Clewiston Middle School. Clewiston is on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee and only an hour from Ft Myers. Not long after I bought my first flats boat and used it to start guiding the lake and the back bay waters of Ft Myers. One thing led to another and a couple of years later I had so many requests for fishing charters that I had to give up living near the lake and the teaching job. I started charter fishing guide services on the Ft Myers and Marco Island waters and the rest is history.
As a full-time fishing guide, I'm on the water year round. When I was a part time guide I wasn't as good a guide and my teaching job suffered as well. Why risk your well earned vacation time fishing with someone who can't devote 100% of their time and efforts to finding and staying on top fish 365 days a year.
Many of my customers are very experienced fishermen and book me to catch trophy sized fish. However, I have vast experience with novice anglers and children and will take the time to teach fishing techniques that make fishing trips more successful and exciting. The fishing tips that you will learn will enable you to have more fishing success on your own fishing trips for years to come.
Having grown up in Southwest Florida, I have been exposed to all aspects of fishing in the Ft Myers and surrounding areas. While living in the interior of the state I was able to learn the waters of the 10,000 Islands from Everglades City, Marco Island and the east coast waters of Stuart and Palm Beach counties. I also fished the waters of Fort Myers, Pine Island, Charlotte Harbor and Boca Grande. In addition to Southwest Florida, I have competitively fished the waters of the Texas Gulf Coast, the Louisiana Delta, and the coasts of Mississippi, Alabama and Pamlico Sound in North Carolina while competing on the ESPN Redfish Cup tournament trail for the last 4 years. Each of the these areas have their own unique habitat. In order to be competitive we have had to modify our style of fishing to match the conditions in each event. Being exposed to this type of competitive fishing has improved my fishing in my home waters and keeps me "fresh" so that I don't get bored fishing the same old Ft Myers area waters year after year.
